Too Early?

Too Late?

A dawn raid in summer, especially after the previous day and evening had been one of great activity amongst the Drake, is pretty well known as a good thing to try.  But what about in April when, seemingly, fly life is not yet in abundance?

Have a look at these two pictures. I apologise for their great size and bandwidth gobbling propensities but I want you to have the option of making a click on them twice to see the rise forms. Check out the times they were taken this morning.

Maybe we are missing some opportunities here?

  1. 9-5 fishing gives the fish time to feed freely on the surface. We don't always need to be at them.

  2. To be truthful I believe they were midges. Very small flies anyway. If I had been fishing instead of doing a bit of reconnaissance, I would have opted for an aphid in black, or a Sturdy's Fancy, or a Grey Duster of about size 20 or 18.

You are perfectly right in that we do not need to be hammering away at the fish all the time. What this mornings observations showed was that, even in April, it is possible to enjoy a few quiet hours before the world is awake. The second photograph shews a piece of Town water, where anglers will be crowded out from the water between the hours of 9 - 5 so maybe a couple of hours at the start of the day would be a good and safe time to enjoy this particular reach.

I would be disappointed not to see rises in those two locations on News Year day, at dawn never mind a mild spring morn, as it was here in Herefordshire.

More importantly; what was on the menu?

    Regards
